It is in our blood to travel, to explore and you can clearly see this behaviour in young children. They are too young to be stopped by cultural rules and in the nature vs. nurture battle there is still a clear favourite called natural instinct. So how is it that we are sitting at our desks, or working on some building, scanning products at a counter or giving advice about clothing just so we can eat the animals we used to catch ourselves.
At which point did the human race decide to stop hunting and start doing something else?
It could have taken decades, hundreds of generations for any of the tribe members (nomads) to have seen another tribe but eventually they did. They moved with the animals and eventually arrived in the territory of other tribes. At this point nature’s greatest driving force took a whole new meaning. Competition
Let's add a couple of hundred years
Competition was of course already known within the tribe, there would always be a battle of who is the better hunter, the best dancer , who makes the nicest hut , impregnates the most women , has the best tattoo. Now with the other tribe as a competitor they could compete against their best hunter, best dancer, and greatest hut builder and so on.
Let's add a couple of hundred years to the mix
All the tribes had one thing in common, they were all nomads and because of the competition between the tribes more intelligent solutions had to be found. They needed to be better than the other tribe and the same urge of “being better” was for all those tribes around the world who ended up in a competitive situation. The only problem is why make a great looking hut if you are going to leave it in 6 months time to follow the animals. Now the other kick starter fell in to place.
It might have all started with two boys from different tribes daring each other to catch a wild horse without killing it but this type of competitive play triggered the Domestication of Animals
Let's add a couple of hundred years
So now we have the perfect ingredients to stay at home. The tribe is big & smart enough. Most of the male competition of other tribes got slaughtered and the remaining members got merged as slaves in the stronger tribe. Animals and plants were domesticated in a new farming culture run by a few tribe members and the slaves they conquered.
Now you would think this would be enough to sustain a great culture for millennia to come?
Wrong! We are still talking about humans here and so the final piece in the puzzle that leads us into our current existence is Power. This time the tribes who are now upgraded to “civilizations” are not following the animals but are searching the world. There is more land to conquer, more tribes to enslave and more power to harness.
This travelling attitude has never changed in our instincts. We still feel like doing it but sadly enough are taught not to do so. “Leave the travelling to the powerful and the fools”. They might have told you “all you need is right here”.
So if I can give you one suggestion, go camping in the woods and hunt some bambies :)
